English
351 Widgets
Widgets are online tools and snippets of code which
you can use to add functionality to your web pages. English 351 is
not a programming class, but there is no reason you cannot cut and
paste javascripts into your pages. Most of these widgets came from
requests by students, so if there is something you would like to be
able to do in one of your sites, let me know.
- Cool
Tools A collection of c-net,com cool javascript tools. Too
many to list here. If you are looking for an interesting javascript
effect, start here.
- Buttons. This page is a collection
of buttons which do simple but useful tasks. So far I have a close
button, a back button, and a reload page button. Any other requests?
- Animated
clocks. You can copy these gifs to your page to created an
animated clock that shows the current time.
- Random Text Widget. Inserts
random text anywhere in your page.
- Style-O-Matic.
A c-net cool tool for experimenting with Cascading Style Sheets.
You use this tool to experiment with different css settings.
- Image
Cycling Page This page cycles through a series of images.
Warning, you must do quite a bit of tweaking to customize the
cycling for your page. It is not difficult, but there are a number
of steps.
- Last Modified This javascriptlet
inserts the date a page was last modified. I use this widget to
add last modified dates to all of my 351 pages.
- Add a counter.
Members of the Illinois State community can use the code on this
page to add a counter to their pages. The process is pretty easy.
You copy the code, paste it in code view and tweak it. Personally,
I do not care for counters. I do not feel they add much to a site,
but other people like thema good deal.
- Random
Link This lsick little widget sends the user to a rndom link
on each click.
This page has been visited
times.
Javascript Resources
I did not write any of the above widgets from scratch; I found
javascripts on the web, and then I tweaked them for the class. Here
are some of my favorite sources.
