Washington, who graduated from Fisk University in 1889, became a principal at Tuskegee Institute. After marrying Booker T. Washington (the founder of the Institution), she worked with him in expanding the school, becoming the first director of Girls' Industries and, later, the dean of women. In 1896 she united two major national black women's associations with hundreds of local organizations, founding the National Association of Colored Women.
