Texts Needed for English 495, Section 2: Marxist Theory
Texts you will need to buy or borrow:
Eagleton, Terry, and Drew Milne, eds., Marxist Literary Theory
Hennessy, Rosemary, Materialist Feminism and Poststructural Discourse
Hennessy, Rosemary, Profit and Pleasure: Sexual Identities in Late Capitalism
Laclau, Ernesto, and Chantal Mouffe, Hegemony and Socialist Strategy

For students at Illinois State University, these books will be available at local bookstores. For other students the books should be easy to order from amazon.com or another on-line bookstore. If you have trouble getting a text, please email me.

In addition, students will need to read excerpts from the following books that can be found in most university libraries:
Althusser, Louis, "Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses," from Lenin and Philosophy and Other Essays. London: Monthly Review Press, 1971

Hennessy, Rosemary and Chrys Ingraham. Materialist Feminism: A Reader

Jameson, Fredric. "The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism." In Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, Durham: Duke University Press, 1991, 1-51.

Cedric Robinson, Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition. London: Zed, 1983.

On-line Texts:
All of the texts by Marx and other writers that are out of copyright will be available on-line, but you may find it useful to pick up a collection of Marx's writings in paperback. Most of the texts by Marx that we will read can be found in The Portable Marx, by Eugene Kamenka, from the Viking Portable Library. I have included the page numbers of the text in Kamenka at the beginning of the electronic texts, where they are available.
