The Master's in English allows students to concentrate in any one of a number of specializations areas, including Creative Writing.

The following Creative Writing courses are available on the graduate level:

  • ENG 347.01: Advanced Creative Writing: Poetry
  • ENG 347.02: Advanced Creative Writing: Prose
  • ENG 347.03: Advanced Creative Writing: Creative Nonfiction
  • ENG 348: Playwriting

Degree requirements for the Master's in English (emphasis in creative writing)

  • English 401 Introduction to Graduate Studies
  • English 402 Introduction to the Composing Process (required for students teaching composition)
  • One course in the pedagogy of Creative Writing or approved substitute.
  • Two or three elective courses, such as hypertext or visual rhetoric, in Literary and Cultural Studies, language rhetoric, and/or theory, including one course in the genre in which the student will write the thesis.
  • One elective in an area related to the thesis offered by departments other than our own, to be approved by the student's advisor.
  • Three courses in creative writing (one per semester for full-time students) prior to thesis hours.
  • Creative thesis, with critical preface (4 hours)
