background
Typography is the art and techniques of type design includinging the style and arrangement. The arrangement of type is the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, line spacing and letter spacing. A complete set of all the letters, numbers and symbols available in one typeface (or style) is called a font.
Typography originates in ancient times when punches and dies were used to make seals and currencies. Movable type began in China in the 11th century while moveable metal type has been traced to 13th century Korea. In the 15th century in Europe methods were developed for casting letterpunches to replicate multiple copies of texts.
All printed material includes typography. The style and range of typography differs depending on rhetorical needs. For example, advertising uses typography to set a theme or portray a mood by using large, bold text. Often typography is associated with a specific company or brand. Display typography is used by graphic designers on materials from book covers to vending machines. The potential of display typography resides in its artistry, not necessarily in its readability. Typography is rhetorical, technical and artistic.
the project
Choose three quotes that you want to work with. The quotations can come from any source: film, literature, pop culture, TV, philosophy, etc. Create a typographic design for each quote. Each quote should fit on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. You can use a portrait or landscape layout. The final product should be visible from a least an 8 foot distance. You want your design readable, creative and visually logical. Accompanying your design, you will write a short explanation and reflection about your choices. This will include the name of the font you chose, the source (designer, url, software, etc.) and an explanation of how you envision the design working with the idea or concepts reflected in the quote. What message are you trying to convey? How does the design aid you in that endeavor? You will write an explanation for each design.
You will present one of your designs to the class. In your presentation, I want you to explain your rhetorical and design choices as you do in your reflection.
