"Growing up (Post)modern is the fourth conference in the annual "Border Subjects" series held at the University Galleries at Illinois State University. This year's conference will feature panel sessions on the commodification of childhood, modern and postmodern representations of childhood, issues in African-American youth culture, "coming out" for girls in Victorian culture and the representation of subjectivity in contemporary fiction for girls, and other topics.
The conference will also feature talks by Henry Giroux, author of The Mouse that Roared: Disney and the End of Innocence (1999) as well as many other books on education and popular culture, Ian Wojcik-Andrews, author of Margaret Drabble's Female Bildungsroman (1995), and the just released ......... and Jerry Phillips, author of numerous scholarly articles on issues of race and class in youth culture and literature.
