PROPOSAL FOR GRANT:
You will read the proposal below and then write a grant proposal to a
specific audience of your choice.
INTRODUCTION:
I am a graduate student at Illinois State University and my major is M.S.
Agribusiness. My aim is to establish a pesticide industry. After the completion
of my study, importance will be given to the biological control and research
that teaches society to use biological pesticides instead of chemicals.
The chemicals are entering the food chain and affecting the health of
the people. To prevent this developing of the biological pesticides that
can control the pests to a greater extent is necessary.
ABSTRACT:
This project is to study the characteristics of the predators and parasites
which can control a specific pest to a greater extent, their environmental
characteristics to multiply for use and conditions required for their
storage. My interest is developing bio-control agents to control the pest
helicoverpa armigera which is a problematic pest in corn, most of the
vegetable crops like tomato, okra, and most of the pulse crops, such as
cotton. This pest developing resistance was not possible to control by
the chemicals. In an area in India this pest developed resistance about
some hundreds of times. And also the excess use of the chemicals by the
farmers entering the food chain and becoming fatal to the human being.
Production of the right biological pesticides decreases the use of chemical
pesticides necessary to ultimately help mankind.
This includes selection of the predators and parasites based on the
extent of their activity, their multiplying ability, tolerance to different
environmental conditions and ease of handling and storage.
TITLE: BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF HELICOVERPA SPP
Identification of the predators
Subjecting them to different environmental conditions
Testing the life cycle to enable quick multiplication.
Selection of predators based on their ability to control, their tolerance
to different environmental conditions, quick multiplication and ease of
handling.
Multiplication for use.
Identification of the parasites which may include bacterial, fungal and
viral parasites.
Study of the biology of the parasites.
Genetic research and manipulation of genes for effective control of the
pest.
Selection of the parasites based on the desirable characters.
Multiplication for further use by the farmers.
Description of work:
This involves collecting data from the others who are already working
and helping mutually. Observing the biology of the parasites and predators
in the lab and conducting experiments in the fields. Conducting experiments
genetically in the lab to develop them to control the pest drastically
in short duration. Field trials and multiplication for further use by
the farmers.
This type of work is also in progress in different universities undertaken
by some scientists. One of them is indicated below.
The uptake of pesticides based upon insect viruses, as substitutes for
chemicals, in India is being held back by the poor standard of viral insecticides
produced locally. This project aims at developing and disseminating improved
production procedures developed by NRI to local producers. The project
will set up a new facility at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU)
to produce improved formulations of Helicoverpa armigera nuclear polyhedrosis
virus (HaNPV) to control H.armigera on field crops. These will be tested
at TNAU as well as being supplied to other IPM projects in both international
and national programmers. A database of insect viruses characterized by
DNA RFLP will be built up for evaluation as bio control agents. Quality
control protocols for NPV pesticides will be established and disseminated
to Indian researchers and commercial producers.
