One of the points of pride for the ISU English Department
is the fact that its Writing Program was the first in the nation to offer all
of its writing classes in computer classrooms. Research on computers in composition
points to the numerous benefits of this approach for both instructors and students.
The August Orientation Week will provide new instructors
with a hands-on introduction to the technology and offer them several opportunities
to use the technology in much the same ways their students will be using it
in class. The Writing Program also employees a technology assistant to act as
a liaison between writing instructors and Computer User Services. The technology
assistant should be able to answer basic questions about the computer labs and
provide assistance to instructors needing additional training and mentoring
in ways to sucessfully integrate various computer technologies into the English
101 classroom.
The STV 250 area, where the computer labs are located,
is staffed at all times by monitors who are knowledgeable about computers. Students
who have computer problems while they are working in the lab (in or out of class)
are encouraged to ask the monitors for help.
