Some Select Comments About Uses for the Course Packet
While the students find it difficult to read, I use the essay on the
rhetoric of case studies early in the course. Why? Because case studies
are frequently used as learning tools in business courses, and I want
my students to be familiar with the genre.
I have used the designated course packet in my course, but have done
so on a minimal basis. The course packet services three main purposes:
- Students use the articles to practice writing Executive Summaries.
- Students use the models of good and bad Executive Summaries when
learning to write their own. They also use the sample memos to better
understand how to format and draft professional memos.
- Students read “The Role of Narrative Structure in the transfer
of Ideas” as part of Unit 2 on writing Case Studies.
Other than that, I prefer to direct students to The Business Writer’s
Handbook for more comprehensive examples of professional business
writing.
