Executive Summaries

Figurative Language

  • The use of figurative language is minimal in business communications; therefore, the use of figurative language in our students' writing for this class should be infrequent (or exceptional).

Ethical and Legal Dimensions of Writing

  • Students should increase their familiarity with:
    • Ethical dimensions of writing in business
    • Legal dimensions of writing in business

Presentation Skills

  • Students should be required to give (or have a significant speaking role in giving) a presentation during the semester.

Clear, Concise Writing

  • Students should learn to:
    • write with clarity,
    • get to the major point(s) quickly and directly,
    • express their points (and meanings) in an explicit fashion,
    • be brief,
    • yet avoid a telegraphic style in their writing

Citation Usage

  • Students should master the use of both:
    • In-text (parenthetical) citations
